It’s that time of year once again. The cooler autumnal weather is taking over, the evenings are getting darker earlier and the slow cookers and soups are cooking in the kitchen. What better way to accompany this change than a new Skyrim playthrough?
Released on 11th November 2011, the world was introduced to Skyrim. A vast open-world game from Bethesda exploring another side of the Elder Scrolls universe. This was the fifth instalment in the franchise, with events that occur around 200 years after those in The Elder Scrolls Oblivion and during the fourth era.
There’s no denying that Skyrim was a huge hit right from release, and even now, almost 15 years later, it is still a game going from strength to strength. It’s still as popular as ever and sees many people replay the game on a regular basis.

My First Skyrim Adventure
I remember the first time I set foot in Skyrim. I hadn’t long had my Xbox 360, and I remember my friends playing it at launch. I happened to ask what they were playing, and having explained that the game had dragons in it, I was sold. I quickly headed to my local Argos and picked up a copy.
It was a bit of an event in itself collecting the game because despite having my ID with me, which was my driving licence, apparently my photo didn’t look like me when it clearly did. Anyway, game in hand, I made my way back home and started my first Skyrim adventure.
Over time, I picked up Skyrim over and over again; however, I’ve never fully completed the game or any of the additional content. No matter how many times I’ve started a new save. Regardless of how many times I pick it up on another platform, I still haven’t completed the game. Not even anywhere close.
A New Dragonborn is Born?
So, it has gotten to that time of year once again where I decided it’s time to start a new Skyrim playthrough. How long will this last? Truthfully, I have no idea, but I do want to try and push myself to at least complete the base Skyrim experience.
For this playthrough, I’m playing on the PlayStation 5, and I chose to go with a Dark Elf build. Mainly because of fire resistance and no real other reason. Like any seasoned Skyrim player, I made my way through the opening moments of the story, took on a dragon and suddenly people were calling me the Dragonborn.
While I have a vague idea as to what this means with the story, the true meaning and impact still remain a mystery. Maybe that is a sign to finish the main story, I don’t know.
Despite the unknown ahead of me, I set off on my merry way. Trying to focus on the main story of the game but at the same time, going on a side quest of a side quest. Exploring, getting lost, chased by giants, Lydia being Lydia and just having fun.
As for the main story, I’m still very early on, but I’ve started collecting a few shouts. I just need to find some more dragons to take on to be able to use them.
I’m about ten hours into this Skyrim run currently, and that in itself has been a real rollercoaster adventure as it is. I know I’ve barely scratched the surface, but I’m still having fun running around and just having fun.
The Creation Club
I did; for this playthrough, add a couple of graphics-based mods to my game. One of these was to help enhance the various weather states in the game, and the other was an all-in-one graphics overhaul for the game. It’s made a nice difference with the graphics looking more realistic and clearer as well.
I’m tempted to explore gameplay-based ones as well as cosmetic ones in the future, but for now I’m quite content with the graphics mods. Ultimately I’m waiting for the Ikea and Skyrim collaboration mod to release on PlayStation 5, which I’m hoping will be soon as well.
The real question now is, will I actually stick with Skyrim and finally finish at least the main story for the first time? Only time will tell for this Dragonborn in training!
