An Adventure into a Snowy Moominvalley
While I grew up with the Moomin franchise, this is the first time that I’m exploring one of the games. I was always drawn to Moomintroll Winter’s Warmth from the moment I saw it revealed. The exploration of the cold, chilling unknown, all of which lay ahead for one little Moomin. I just knew I needed to find out what happens in the end and along the journey.
I wanted to experience Moomintroll Winter’s Warmth on the Steam Deck this time around since the game was fully verified on the console. It just felt more fitting. Soon enough I was about to experience the game and begin my adventure. The opening moments of the game were fitting and perfectly gave me the context and story as to why the Moomins spend the winter sleeping.
As you begin to progress into the game, you’ll begin to meet the cast of characters, each of which plays a part in Moomintroll’s expedition, including the Lady of the North. With something somewhat suspicious as to the role she plays in the story this early on, it was time to hit the snowy ground running.
The deeper I walked through the snow with Moomintroll, the more I knew this would be an emotional and memorable experience. While primarily a cosy game, it keeps you engaged throughout your time with the game. I truly want to share so many of the parts of the story, but that would risk spoiling it so much. This is certainly one game I feel you need to experience regardless of whether you know much about Moomins in general or have played the previous game.

It goes without saying that my time with Moomintroll Winter’s Warmth has been different from what I expected, however in a positive way. It’s an emotional tale that keeps you wanting to find out what happens to Moomintroll and friends. Do they make it through winter? Who exactly is the Lady of the North? What about Moomintroll’s parents? So many questions that slowly become answered as you play.
I felt no pressure to rush through the game and played at a steady pace. I had a couple of minor glitches but nothing that impacted my overall experience on Steam Deck. Everything is explained to you along the way, and it just flows nicely from one part of the game to another.
Having not played Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley, I’ll certainly be checking that out soon, however, Moomintroll Winter’s Warmth is a beautiful game for many reasons. From the stunning hand drawn style of the game to the almost interactive storybook style gameplay experience. It’s a story about friendship, self-discovery, emotions, and finding home again no matter what it takes.
If you’re looking for a cosy story driven game, then this should certainly be on your radar. Moomintroll Winter’s Warmth is out now!
