The Rumour Mill: Nintendo Switch 2 Thoughts

The successor to the much-loved Nintendo Switch is the talk of the town at the moment and rightly so. For months, there have been many rumours and potential leaks about the console. However, it appears that more legitimate-looking information as well as a glance at upcoming accessories for the console have been appearing online.

With mock-ups of what people believe the Nintendo Switch 2 could look like alongside accessories from various manufacturers, it makes you wonder just how close are we to the official announcement. What we do know is that it’s likely to be sometime between now, 8th January 2025 and the end of March 2025. As for a release date, that could be any date although from seeing what’s been speculated online, the new console could be ready for purchasing sometime in April or May of this year.

With that being said, the latest speculation got me thinking about what I would like to see from the Nintendo Switch 2 when it does eventually launch.

The Console

For the console itself, the main couple of things I’d like to see is that not only do we see a larger screen but that it is also an OLED screen. I love the OLED screen on my current Nintendo Switch and I know that might be a little farfetched at launch but something I’m secretly hopeful for however, it’s not make or break for me if it’s not an OLED screen.

The second thing, which I’m sure Nintendo have already thought of is an improved battery. One that when playing handheld, lasts for a good period of time. Currently, the Nintendo Switch OLED has an estimated time of 4.5-9 hours of charge depending on the game/usage of the console. While not a large increase, a battery that could run for an estimated 6โ€“11 hours in handheld mode would be a great improvement.

Again, neither of these are make or break points for when it comes to purchasing the next Nintendo Switch console.

The E-Shop

I don’t love it, yet I don’t completely hate it. It’s just, it could do with an overhaul or a new look to say the very least.

A way that you can better explore and discover new games, filter through the endless sale and combat the loading glitch when you get so far into the sale. There are aspects of the E-Shop in its current form that are okay and work well, but there’s still areas where it could be improved. Hopefully that’s something we will see on the Nintendo Switch successor.

A New Era For Games

For me launch games aren’t something that I’ve really thought about in great detail. Yes, there are certainly games/franchises I’d love to see and what you could class as dream games, but truthfully I’m not entirely sure. If you were to ask me what I’d like to see though here are a few ideas that come to mind:

  • New Super Mario Game – Following on from Super Mario Odyssey/Wonder
  • The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess Remake or Remaster
  • New Pokรฉmon Game – Legends Z-A, Main Story Game or a New Let’s Go Game
  • Brand New IP Launching for the First Time on Nintendo Switch 2
  • New Animal Crossing and Splatoon Games
  • Expansion to Nintendo Switch Online, to Include more Consoles and Games

This also leads slightly onto the ability to play any pervious generation physical Nintendo Switch games on the console too!

Pricing

The price for the upcoming Nintendo console is still speculated a lot online. While nothing has fully been confirmed yet, I’ve seen a few different possibilities bouncing around online. Realistically I feel we’ll be looking at around ยฃ300-ยฃ400 for the new console. That’s before adding in the likes of cases, additional chargers or JoyCons for example.

I do think that Nintendo’s pricing of consoles and official accessories are where they should be for the most part. I’m hoping that in this new upcoming era they continue to follow the same kind of pricing as much as possible.

Overall Thoughts

Surely, with all the latest leaked information coming out on the internet, we must be a matter of days away from an official announcement. With accessories being showcased with mocks of a Nintendo Switch 2 to product listings on Amazon Japan and even the Nintendo X account updating their header with Mario and Luigi, there seems to be something brewing.

I am excited not only for the announcement but also the release of the Nintendo Switch 2. For me, it’s not likely to be a day one purchase at the moment however, I’ll probably be waiting until a bundle is released or potentially one of the first special editions. This is essentially what I did when the original Nintendo Switch was released.

It definitely will be interesting to see the kinds of games this new Nintendo console will have since we’ve had thousands upon thousands of games on Nintendo Switch to explore. That in itself is another topic for another day purely because of how the Nintendo Switch created so many possibilities for a variety of different genres of games to launch and be discovered however, I digress.
