Finding my way with Ryza and Friends

With the important details about the Atelier Ryza Secret Trilogy Deluxe Pack covered, it’s time to look at my own time with the game. Before I go any further, I have never played an Atelier game of any kind, nor have I played any of the Atelier Ryza games before my play through. However, I do know bits about the franchise of games and have always been curious and intrigued by the games. Now, thanks to the kindness of the KOEI TECMO team, I’ve got the opportunity to experience these games for the very first time.

Starting with Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout DX naturally, my time has been spent playing between both my PC using an Xbox Controller as advised by the game and my Steam Deck.

I was truly unsure what to expect as I started my journey, but only time would tell as I began to make my way through the opening hours of the first game.

After meeting Lent and Tao and teaming up alongside them, as a team we were soon learning our relevant desired skills. For myself as Ryza, it was into the basics of alchemy but also finding my own unique alchemy style.

At first, I found the alchemy feature slightly overwhelming, but after a few goes on my own, it was like second nature. Well, for the more basics concoctions, at least for now.

While on the topic of alchemy and creating, I really enjoyed not only having to go out and gather various materials, but also having the option to learn and piece together the materials for each recipe I was working on. Of course, you also have the option to auto add ingredients if you wish to speed up the process and have the game automatically do it for you. I think it’s nice having the two options there to chose from.

The alchemy skill is certainly something I need to work on more, as I’m still making some mistakes, but that will surely come with time!

Getting the Hang of Combat

When combat was first introduced to me in the game, it was a little bit of a button mashing moment. I panicked and was also distracted at the time, so missed what I was supposed to actually be doing. However, to overcome this, I decided to give the new Custom Combat mode a go.

I set up the combat with the default options it gave me and jumped in with Tao and Lent. Not only did create this custom combat scenario mean I could familiarize myself more with the mechanics and Ryza, it also allowed me to also utilize Tao and Lent more! It certainly was worthwhile, and spent a good amount of time just playing around with custom combat before heading back to the story.

Making Steady Progress

Now, it was a good job I’d practiced in the Custom Combat mode for a bit because as soon as I carried on with the main story, I had a whole host of enemies to battle. However, this time I felt more comfortable with what I was doing. While still easier enemies, I was truly showing them who was the boss along with Lent and Tao by my side!

However, with needing to continue my journey while I’m on the main land, gathering more resources was also a must and that certainly was the case. I was coming across things I’d already discovered, but also I came across some new materials too! Who knows just what I’ll be able to make now!

However, between honing my alchemy skills and also improving my combat reflexes, I’m making my way through the game and the story at a good steady pace, I feel.

Steam Deck vs Desktop

As I mentioned previously, I’ve been switching between playing Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout DX between both my PC and Steam Deck. Initially I was worried as to how easy I’d be able to switch between playing between the two, but in fact, it’s quite seamless. With the added cloud save between the two platforms, I can easily pick up and play on either depending on my mood. However, grabbing my Steam Deck to play on those colder, darker evenings has been very wholesome and cosy.

I can’t say that I prefer one platform over the other when playing, as I’ve enjoyed being able to freely switch between the two.

Overall Thoughts So Far

While I still have a way to go with the main story, from what I’ve played so far and for my first ever play through I’m certainly enjoying it!

I don’t know exactly how far I’m into the game currently, but based on my playtime, I think I’ve made a good dent into the game so far. At a nice steady pace, I’ve not once felt forced to progress in any way, and I’ve been able to go slightly off track at times without any worries.

I’m really enjoying the characters, especially my partners in crime Lent and Tao as well as many others I’ve met along the way such as Lila and Empel to name a couple more. They each have their own clear personalities as well as their own interesting secrets, stories and mysteries surrounding them.

I truly can’t fault my experience so far. Everything has been smooth sailing from the moment I first launched into the game, switching between PC and Steam Deck, navigating the game and so on. Even as I write this post, I’ve got the faint sound of the game’s background music playing, keeping me focused and inspired!

I’m curious to see how Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout DX plays out but also to see how it feeds into Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy DX and then into Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key DX. I have questions, that I’m sure as I continue my journey will be answered, but that will come in time.

Again, I’d like to thank the team at KOEI TECMO Europe for this opportunity. It has been amazing and so much fun to be on my own Atelier journey. However, while this post is coming to an end, I’ll be continuing to document my ongoing journey through the games on my social media.

So, if you’ve ever been curious about the Atelier Ryza games or looking to return, why not consider checking out the new deluxe versions of the three games?
