Today’s the day! The long-awaited sequel to the much loved game Spirit of the North is launching today!

Take a step into an ancient world that has been left in ruin and begin an adventure of a lifetime with an isolated fox who has ended up far from home and a wise Raven keeping them company. You’ll find yourself seeking out lost legendary guardians and freeing them from the grasp of the dark shaman Grimnir.

You’ll be able to explore and roam free through the ancient and vast world full of long forgotten history. With unique biomes and beautiful scenery to take in, you’ll find that each area will have its own secrets and challenges to uncover. All while encountering a variety of legendary guardian beasts and taking them on through intense puzzle-based moments.

However, that’s not all! You’ll discover powerful runes to help you on your quest, as well as extensive customization options when it comes to creating your own Fox’s appearance. This will ensure that your play through will be one of a kind and tailored to you.

An Unknown Tale Lies Ahead

As you begin your tale in Spirit of the North 2, you begin my learning the basics of navigating the world through your Fox’s eyes. With the help of your Raven companion, you’ll be jumping around and sprinting in no time.

Having decided to use an Xbox Controller for my play through, learning the controls came naturally and was easy to recall which button did which command or movement.

Being in the opening stages of the game, you could start to see just how detailed and beautiful the world is. Even the free-roaming foxes that you run into added to the feeling of family. Each fox unique in detail from the next roaming free.

Now, this is where we start to really be able to branch off and start exploring. Collecting scrolls, learning about the various guardians and lore that surround the world, collecting runes and solving various puzzles. However, suddenly, things take an unexpected turn.

It almost feels like starting over. Leaving what has happened in the past in search of moving forward. Still, we have an even bigger degree of unknown ahead, but right now, I can’t let that hold my little Fox and me back. Reestablishing my surroundings, I set off on my journey once again.

This is where I start to learn more about Runes as well as the skill point tree. How to work together with them and unlock various skills on my adventure, starting off with an additional health point. Even as you progress further into the game, you’ll truly see just how the Runes help you and your companion along the way.

Throughout the game, you find yourself not only exploring the open world, smashing jars for crystals, unlocking obelisks and other collectibles, but you also find yourself completing a variety of puzzles, each varying in difficulty. Some of which are just out in the world, some are deeper into crypts, caverns and underground temples. There really is so much to explore while completing the story of Spirit of the North 2.

My time with Spirit of the North has been wonderful. It’s been a journey that has not only felt emotional at times, but also optimistic as you chip away at the game. There have been moments where I’ve felt as though I’m playing a cosy laid back version of Skyrim or even Death Stranding when you are just walking about exploring the world. A strange way to explain it, but not at the same time.

As I was playing through Spirit of the North 2, I didn’t run into any issues. Even when playing on Steam Deck, it ran smoothly as well as switching between playing with an Xbox Controller and Keyboard & Mouse set up was seamless.

I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised with the game. From the gameplay and features, learning how to navigate the world as a fox, the customization of your fox as well as the skill tree, the runes to the lore and more. Tailor each of these and more through each play through for an experience not like the one previously.

With no real enemies to encounter within the world other than various legendary guardians from time to time, you’ll find yourself captivated by the surroundings, the soundtrack, solving puzzles and overcoming challenges all from a fox and raven’s perspective.

Spirit of the North 2 is out right now on Steam, Xbox and PlayStation consoles!
