Take to the waters and help clear ocean waste in a short and relaxing game. Recycle the waste you collect, earn coins and upgrade your boat. As you progress through each area, clean up bigger spills, and, different kinds of waste.

Spilled is the first game from solo indie developer Lente, who started working on Spilled as a hobby, turned that hobby into a dream in 2022. Having grown up living on a boat and continuing to do so in 2022, a cosy game about oil spills and a boat quickly gained traction from the game’s highly successful Kickstarter campaign. Now, Lente and the team are just days away from Spilled being fully released.

Setting Sail with Spilled

Spilled is a game that is not only relaxing and easy going but also has a clear message within the game. Your task is to help clear the ocean of oil and any waste you may find along your journey.

Getting started with the game is incredibly easy. With a small on screen tutorial to get you going. Throughout the game, as you progress through more areas, you’ll receive more pop-ups on screen quickly demonstrating how to you use certain mechanics to help assist your clean-up operation.

I started off playing with a keyboard and mouse combination before switching over to an Xbox Controller. A controller is also recommended to use with the game. While either control set up is fine, for my play through, I did find the Xbox Controller made the gameplay experience flow more smoothly.

Spilled, rescued animal

Even though the game has around an hour of game play, I spent a good two hours just sailing around, clearing ocean waste, picking up hidden treasures for recycling and rescuing animals. However, there are also smaller side quests you can do to earn more coins such as putting out fires, finding lost objects and more!

Upgrading your boat is easy. There are three different aspects of your boat you can upgrade, these being the waste collection tank on the back of the boat, the engine and the collection beam at the front of the ship. When you have enough coins and are ready to make changes, you simply sail into the relevant boat and then you continue as planned.

Spilled

With eight different areas to explore, you would think that the task would get repetitive, however it doesn’t. No two areas are the same, each with its own theme, weather and wildlife. While the game is relaxing, and new features added periodically as you progress, the easy-going approach means there is no right or wrong way to play. Collect and recycle the waste in each area and when you are ready you can move into the next area once it’s unlocked or continue clearing the current area.

When an area is nearly complete, the water will be a nice clearer blue colour as opposed to a murky purple/brown colour it used to be. You’ll also be able to see a lot of the wildlife swimming around in the water as well.

What I loved about Spilled, is not only is it relaxing and easy going, that you can easily just get lost into the game by just sailing around and listening to the music. There is just so much about this game that I enjoyed. The colour scheme, art style, the music, how you can just pick up the game and jump back in and revisit areas with ease. It really is a lovely game that doesn’t take long to play through, but you can just relax with.

Lente and the team did a wonderful job with Spilled, and I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next!

Spilled releases on Steam on 26th March 2025. You can wish list the game now, or you can sail on through the demo ahead of the game’s launch!
