What defines a cosy game for you?
Is it a game you can sit down and chill with at the end of a long day? One that you can just get lost in easily? A game that is calming and relaxing for you to play?
There are many reasons for a game to be cosy. Cosy games are typically defined as games that feature activities such as farming, fishing, exploring, small aspects of combat, magic, cute and adorable characters, and more. The games tend to go at a much steadier pace but are also full of fun art styles, cute visuals and pretty colour pallets.
However, today I wanted to look at some of my favourite cosy games that I’ve played over time. Whether it’s a more recent game or one that has been out for a while, these are some that I still to this day go back to time and time again to sit and unwind with at the end of a long day.
Animal Crossing New Horizons
The game of the pandemic, Animal Crossing New Horizons means a lot to many of us. For me, not only was it an escape during the days of lockdown, but it actually played a bigger part personally during that time. Connecting with friends in real life and those online. Building relationships and sharing a common want to create the best Animal Crossing Island and get the best villagers.
Even now, despite my original 2020 island being a little messy, I do take the time to jump back in and explore my island and start working on giving it a revamp. I also still have plenty to explore and do in the Happy Home Paradise expansion pack.

Unpacking
There’s just something about virtually unpacking different stages of the story in this game that was just relaxing. Ultimately there was no right or wrong way to place the items and design the room. It was more about putting the pieces of the puzzle together in the right place.

Fields of Mistria
A more recent game to my collection and one that I truly can get lost in. I’ve never felt any pressure to rush through the game but have just taken it step by step and quest by quest. There’s something about the beautiful pastel colours that constantly keeps pulling me back into the game time and time again.
Full of dreamy vibes, farming, magic, romance and more, Fields of Mistria is one game that I’m constantly picking up on Steamdeck after a long day at work.

Fashion Dreamer
Sometimes you just want to jump into a game and create some cool looking outfits. Fashion Dreamer does just that. As someone who grew up in the world of competitive dance when I was younger, I was always drawing different ideas for my dream costumes. There was also the internet client based dress up doll games as well where you could make many different looks. Either way, Fashion Dreamer is a chilled out approach to live out that fashion designer dream!

The Sims 4
This for me is 50/50 because at times it can be fun to jump in, play and go with the flow of the game. However, on the other hand, it can also be the most frustrating game in the world. If you know you know.
Most recently, my time in the game has been spent following my Sim in their adventure through adult life. Exploring features of the game I haven’t done so in a long time and taking a look at ones I’ve missed. It’s been weirdly refreshing to play the game somewhat normally. Previously, I’d spend a lot more time building than actually playing it as a life simulation game. While building for me is still relaxing and more casual it’s been nice to change my playstyle up recently.

Disney Dreamlight Valley
Disney Dreamlight Valley is one of my favourite cosy games as a Disney fan yet, I’m so behind on the story. However, that’s okay because some days I just want to run around, fish and collect resources and other days I want to complete more quests. This is a game I certainly pick up a lot and put down often. However, each time I go back to it, I fall right back into the groove like I did before.

Final Fantasy XIV
Okay, hear me out on this one.
Forget about dungeons, raids, Wolves Den and all that, but let me talk about the more chilled side of the game.
There are some days when I want to play Final Fantasy XIV, but I also want to just chill in the game. In times like these, I’ll usually hang out in the Gold Saucer playing mini-games, fishing or slowly levelling up one of my crafting classes. Then there are days when I just do dungeons and everything like crazy as I need to level up various classes. I’ve always found Final Fantasy XIV one of those games, regardless of my mood, I’ll be able to find something to do and lose myself in the game for a little while.

This is just a snapshot of some of my favourite cosy games, which are still in my current gaming rotation. There were so many to choose from that I couldn’t include them all but I could one day make a part two to this post.
Let me know what are some of your favourite games to sit down and get cosy with especially during the Autumn/Winter season!
